Sole Junkie shows off his handiwork at February’s MAGIC show in Las Vegas.He Touches Your SoleSAN DIEGO ARTIST CUSTOMIZES SNEAKERSSAN DIEGO (April 26, 2007)—For some, it isn’t enough to own the latest pair of sneaks. Those who can’t get enough turn to sneaker artist Steven Cedre Jr., 32, better known as “Sole Junkie,†for custom kicks no one else will have. For approximately $350, including shoes, the classically trained artist will hand paint your favorite pair with whatever your heart desires, straight from his kitchen table.
Real 22 karat gold was used to accent Sole Junkie’s own pair of customized sneaks.Cedre didn’t always intend to become a sneaker artist. In 2006, an unfortunate accident—his toddler son leaped from his bed and landed on Cedre’s head, displacing two spinal discs—left him paralyzed for months; he has since recovered. “It was an accident but I believe it was meant to be,” he told WSAToday.com. In recuperation, Cedre heard about artists in Harlem painting on shoes with airbrushes. Thus, Sole Junkie Customs was born.
Sole Junkie also specializes in ladies’ sneaks as well.While his canvas of choice is a white leather Nike Air Force One, he’ll paint almost any kind of shoe, sometimes even with 22 karat gold and an appliqué of real diamonds. Cedre’s designs are a big hit with Reggaeton and hip-hop musicians around the world. D12 rappers Bizzare and Con Artist, along with Reggaeton artist Julio Voltio, are among his biggest fans. “Guys from the sneaker culture love this,†Cedre said. “I’ve always loved hip-hop and art, and I’ve been painting since I was a kid. Doing this combines my two loves.†Even though Cedre knows his customers covet their newfound pairs like priceless works of art, he encourages them to wear them “at least once.†“It’s wearable art for a reason,†he said. Right now, he takes orders online through his Web site, www.solejunkie.com, and his MySpace page, www.myspace.com/solejunkie. So far, business seems to be going well; Cedre says it’s helped him support his wife, two children and Miss Dior, their tiny toy poodle. |
